6 Ways to Have a Healthy, Green Pregnancy
By Danielle Thegreenerme
Raising a green baby doesn't begin when the baby is born, it starts well before that. What you put into your body affects you and the baby. Pregnant Moms have a lot to consider today with their diet. It's difficult enough trying to find the right food when you aren't pregnant, but having a living, vulnerable person inside of you doesn't make things easier in terms of food choices. Moms need a lot of protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A lot pregnant mothers make the mistake of increasing their calorie intake without considering the quality of the food they are eating. Not only does the calorie intake need to increase, but the types of food have to vary. Here are some examples: 1. Drink a small smoothie a few times a week. Stock your freezer full of organic frozen fruit, if possible, in a number of varieties. Try to stock a range of colors in fruit. 2. Dairy is one of the most important foods to eat organic. Growth hormones and steroids shot into cows to make them produce more milk ultimately end up in our milk. You'll notice the difference in taste between organic milk and regular milk, too. To be even more eco friendly, buy a local brand of organic milk. 3. Don't paint the nursery, and purchase zero voc paints when you do paint it. If you can, have someone else paint the nursery, and open the windows to ventilate. 4. Go to full serve gas stations when you are pregnant. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are also released when you pump gas. If you can, go to a full serve gas station, or have someone else pump that's with you. While a few times pumping yourself probably won't hurt your baby, many exposures in a non-ventilated area should be avoided. 5. Drink your water in BPA free containers, stainless steel, or glass. Avoid drinking out of plastic when you can to cut down on your exposure to BPA, a harmful material in plastics. 6. Increase your vegetable intake, and buy organic when possible. Buying organic isn't always an option, so when it isn't try to avoid canned foods and opt for frozen or fresh. Not only does your baby need essential vitamins and minerals found in vegetables, but it's better for the planet. Keep in mind that taking a multivitamin supplement does not excuse you from eating vegetables!

When my wife and I were going to LaMaze they told us that one of the healthy foods to eat during pregnancy was (surprise!!) Pizza because with the right toppings it contained 5 different food groups:grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats. I thought beer was a food group. (grin)
Great information, Danielle. I see too many women pumping gas that apparently aren't aware of the danger. Maybe we need a warning sticker on their gas cap. Keep up the good work. Frederick
Nice tips to keep in mind.
