Why Go Organic in Your Baby Nursery?

By Danielle Thegreenerme

Going Organic With Your Baby - Why Being Eco Friendly Impacts Your Own Health in a Positive Way!

It's not just the environment that needs to be saved from man-made materials, paints, toys, and waste, it's us! Our own children are being exposed to massive amounts of chemicals in our mattresses, rugs, paints, furniture, bedding, toys, and food. Most of these chemicals are not yet regulated by any government agency, so it's up to us, the consumer, to be educated on the health implications of dangerous chemicals found in what we buy.

Children are even more susceptible to these chemicals than adults. With their smaller size, they have less weight, blood, and organic matter for the chemicals to distribute through their body, yet they are exposed to an equal amount of chemicals as adults. During a child's development, chemicals can have serious consequences with growth, the development of reproductive organs, and can be a contributor to asthma, allergies, and weakened lungs.

Organic Mattresses

The most notorious culprits that your baby might be exposed to in the nursery are the bedding and the toys. The average mattress contains a number of chemicals and fire retardants that your child will be in direct contact with on a daily basis (often for hours on end). The stuffing of many mattresses also are treated with pesticides and herbicides, not only killing off all bugs in the area, but running off into the groundwater, and staying on the plant itself (being absorbed into the plant matter). This makes buying an organic crib mattress an excellent choice for your baby's health. Certified organic mattresses use cotton that has been held to certain standards when being farmed, and will lack the chemicals of traditional crib mattresses. Be sure to choose a firm crib mattress that is certified organic.

Organic Baby Toys

Toys are essential for your baby. They learn, entertain, explore and grow through their toys. They also tend to bite, suck and chew on them, too. Putting a toy in their mouths that is full of chemicals is just not a good idea, whether the toy is plastic, cotton, or synthetic plush. Going organic with your toys is another great idea for your baby's health. With organic baby toys, like mattresses, you will want to find toys that are certified organic.

Why Going Organic is Also Good for the Environment

Going organic with your baby is also an eco friendly choice for the environment. By supporting organically grown cotton, you are giving your vote of "no" to chemicals and pesticides used on cotton. You're also helping organic cotton become more popular and supporting organic cotton farmers, which will in turn be a huge positive change for the environment.

Great information and well presented, Danielle.
Too many people look at the bottom price and buy cheap imported toys and items for their children. We should know by now that imports aren't inspected as closely as American made products.
Keep up the good intels on organic.

Very interesting and informative. I think we would all be shocked if the truth were known about all of the chemicals and manmade materials that may be at the root of many health problems. I wish there were more long term studies to examined this.
